The UW Compensation Office is a functional unit within HR that provides compensation and classification expertise to departments of the UW and to UW Medicine. Medical Centers Compensation is the unit within HR Compensation that supports UW Medicine. 

Medical Centers Compensation has an outstanding full time opportunity for a Compensation Specialist. 

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Medical Centers Compensation, this professional level position has responsibility for reviewing and evaluating classified and professional staff positions to ensure alignment and compliance with applicable classification and compensation standards and will exercise discretion and independent judgment in effecting, executing, and discharging various aspects of the compensation and classification function for UW Medicine. Primarily focused on providing professional level support, the Compensation Specialist will provide initial review and conduct preliminary research to enable medical centers compensation consultants to expedite position and requisition reviews. In addition, this position will be independently responsible for routine classification reviews and compensation-related actions for temporary positions and temporary pay. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Review Create Position and Edit Position Restriction requests in Workday for completeness; research and proactively resolve errors, seek out missing information, identify requisitions that may need to go through labor relations review, and facilitate the review process in coordination with the Medical Centers Compensation Consultants.  

  • Conduct review and approval of selected classified staff reclassification requests and requisition reviews, or professional staff position review or requisitions, as assigned.  

  • Review and approve requests for classified staff Temporary Salary Increases (TSIs) and classified step increases.  

  • Perform intake of all classification review requests received for Medical Centers Compensation team. Review for completeness, seek out missing information, and research and proactively resolve errors. Accurately enter information into review tracking database and distribute reviews to Medical Centers Compensation Consultants in a timely manner. Receive completed requests, send notifications, finalize database entry for implementation, and scan and file review packets per guidelines. 

  • Assist Compensation Consultants in ad hoc projects. Gather information for internal equity analysis, assist in cost modeling, update pay tables, and assist in resolving  discrepancies resulting from compensation audits. 

  • Act as main contact for Compensation website updates and form updates. Partner with UW HR partners on communications and website maintenance. 

  • Perform Other Compensation Office Duties: 

    -Participate in compensation and classification related training to further enhance understanding of UW policy, federal and state regulations, and contribute to brainstorming of creative ideas on administering programs that assist in the recruitment, retention and development of staff that meet unit objectives. 

    -Review literature and applicable state and federal laws/regulations that pertain to compensation practices.  This includes responsibility for providing advice and counsel on issues pertaining to the Fair Labor standards Act (FLSA) and establishing the appropriate overtime eligibility status for professional staff positions. 

    -As a member of the Compensation team, interact, provide suggestions and implement changes to work processes; assist in the development of plans and the implementation of enhancements to the compensation and classification system. 

    -May assist in participation in compensation surveys, such as the Milliman Northwest Health Care survey, as well as occasional ad hoc surveys by email or telephone. 

    -Provide general office support, including scanning, filing, SharePoint and common drive maintenance, etc. 

    REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business or Public Administration or related field. 

  • Two years of progressively responsible work in Human Resources. Equivalent education and/or experience may apply. 

  • Must demonstrate excellent writing and oral communications skills, customer service skills, and an ability to work within complex organizational structures while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.       

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. 

    DESIRED: 

  • One year of compensation experience including working with job descriptions or classification specifications, evaluating job content, or providing advice on FLSA status. 

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint). 

  • Experience with UW's employment software, UWHIRES. 

  • Experience in job analysis. Familiarity with the University of Washington's professional staff exemptions, application of FLSA including the "salary basis test." 

  • Ability to be pro-active with a "can do" attitude about finding solutions to customer issues. 

  • Ability to change and adapt to rapidly evolving office procedures and administrative systems.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

    Office environment (cubicles) in Roosevelt Commons West. Occasional visits to other buildings in the University of Washington Medical Center or Harborview Medical Center. Free shuttle service is provided.
