Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Principal Compensation Consultant - PSJH that may be located in Renton, Seattle, Portland, or Irvine. 


The Principal Compensation Consultant works in partnership with compensation leaders on major initiatives and programs supporting client compensation services across Providence St. Joseph Health. Provides a high level of strategic consultative services to solve compensation issues and ensure that compensation programs align with short- and long-term business objectives. Uses analytical rigor to interpret quantitative and qualitative information and draw conclusions in a logical, systematic way. Prepares and delivers recommendations to reach targeted goals. Leads cross-functional teams on compensation initiatives.  May also perform duties of compensation consultants as needed.  Mentors compensation team members.


In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with compensation leaders on major initiatives that link client compensation programs to overall compensation philosophy and corporate culture.  Collaborates on the design, development and implementation of compensation strategy, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Serve as key contributor on complex projects which may be larger in scope, have greater sensitivity, and be more visible within the organization. These may include designing, modeling and costing new compensation strategies.
  • Provide a high level of strategic consultative guidance to solve compensation issues, and encourages others to take a strategic rather than reactive approach. Employ strategies to influence leadership decisions, influence behaviors and drive business objectives.
  • Utilize strong analytical rigor to interpret data, identify trends, prepare analysis and draw conclusions.
  • Prepare recommendations and conveys findings to all levels of compensation leadership and clients, demonstrating the ability to challenge, persuade and influence and reach targeted goals.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in areas of compensation practices. Provides consultative advice and guidance to explain policy and systems to clients, including Core Leaders, HR, Labor, and Talent Acquisition. Help develop and deliver training on compensation related programs.
  • Consult with HR and Labor teams regarding wage/salary matters, promotional increases and/or pay changes outside of policy limits.  Prepare compensation data, provides research, analysis, cost impact and statistical support to Labor Relations during contract negotiations. Interprets wage/salary matters.
  • Participate in audits to ensure adherence to compensation programs, policies, guidelines and regulatory requirements. Perform equity review and analysis as needed if concern of inequity is present. Adhere to organization confidentiality policies.
  • Analyze compensation trends, researches best practices, monitors economic conditions, and keeps up with regulations to ensure compliance with state and federal wage and hour laws and keep current with best practices.
  • Mentor compensation team members in the areas of judgment, problem-solving and business acumen relevant to compensation.

Required qualifications for this position include: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, Social Science, or related field Or equivalent educ/experience.
  • 7 years of relevant and progressive compensation experience with subject matter expertise in wage & hour laws, principles of compensation/salary administration and job evaluation methodology, inclusive of demonstrated experience providing strategic consultative guidance to solve complex compensation issues.
  • 2 years of demonstrated program and project management expertise.
  • 1 year of HR related leadership experience.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation.
